14 in 2010? ESPN Insider advises Flames to sign Theo Fleury.
2010-02-23
Writing about possible trade deadline moves this week, Robert Vollman suggested the Calgary Flames bring back a famous alum to help them down the stretch: Theo Fleury. "Maybe a legendary antagonistic spark plug is just what's needed to fire things up in Calgary," Vollman writes. "Even if I'm wrong and the Flames slowly slide out of contention, at least it would give the fans one last taste of Fleury's exciting brand of hockey." Theo was flattered by the suggestion but doesn't see it as a likely scenario. "I'm in book-tour-shape now. The only thing I'm working out is what to say when I'm hired as a speaker. But hey, never say never." Click "Read More News" below for the link.
Russell, Manitoba Produces Gold Again!
2010-02-20
Russell, Manitoba — a town of just 1,800 people — brings home its second Olympic Gold Medal as Jon Montgomery makes it to the podium eight years after Theo Fleury’s victory with Team Canada. Canada has a population of more than 33 million people, and in the history of the Winter Oympics it has brought home 43 Winter Gold medals. So what is it about this small, prairie community that helps breed champions? According to Theo Fleury, one of only 26 Canadian men's hockey players to win gold since 1952, it's two things: caring people and harsh conditions. “Remember the first settlers? They banded together to take care of each other, and that’s what people in Russell do. And,” he chuckles, “it is freaking freezing there! The conditions are harsh. You have to overcome, persevere. It’s the same mentality you need to compete in the Olympics.”

Blair's Story

We received an incredibly brave and powerful letter last week that the writer has agreed to share with all of you. We thank Blair for his courage to write the letter and for allowing us to post it on our website.
A ‘hot’ teacher and brave hockey player
2010-01-18
I recently wrote about how male victims of sexual assault might face social stigma in coming forward in ways that women don’t (thanks to a reader who eloquently pointed out that a sex assault series I wrote focused mostly on women, not men). I’m not a huge hockey fan, beyond the fact that both my brothers have a love for the game. I’m working on it, though. Anyways, I found hockey player Theo Fleury’s very public disclosure about his sex abuse and the subsequent Winnipeg Police Service investigation really interesting. Last week, I walked into at least two discussion among guys I knew who were discussing sex abuse. Think water-cooler talk, without the water cooler.
FLEURY OF ACCUSATIONS
2010-01-18
Last week, Winnipeg police announced they are investigating a sexual-assault complaint filed by former NHL star Theoren Fleury against his former junior hockey coach, Graham James. This would seem to fulfill Fleury's promise to finally have the case resolved, a promise he made when his book, Playing With Fire, was launched last fall.
"Enough is Enough."
2010-01-18
After years of soul searching, guilt, pain and concern for his family, Theoren Fleury has the courage to dredge it all up again in a new police investigation and a potential new court case. Despite this, a certain Calgary journalist continues his relentless persecution blaming the victim, instead of the abuser. Kirstie McLellan Day, Theo's Playing With Fire co-author says enough is enough.
FLEURY'S STORY IN A 5 WAY TIE FOR THE SECOND PLACE STORY OF THE YEAR
2010-01-15
"By being brave enough to share his story, Fleury gave us a window into the long-term damage sexual abuse does to children -- and what it can take to make them whole, or nearly whole again,'' Vancouver Sun editor-in-chief Patricia Graham said.

To all the fans of the Calgary Flames, I am truly sorry for the comments I made this past week.
2010-01-11
I sometimes say and do things without thinking. I want to apologize to Craig Conroy and Robyn Regehr for my comments. I will never forget my 2 and a half weeks this September and how great it was being with the boys again. The Calgary Flames organization is one of class and integrity and the comments that I made were uncalled for. Please accept my apology. My comments in the future will be more directed to what I'm doing with my life and will reflect the causes that matter to me which are helping people who have suffered from abuse and the great things we have on board for the future.

CALGARY - The clasp on Theoren Fleury's personal Pandora's Box has been broken, the only way possible. He jimmied it open himself. And flooding out, onto the printed page and into the public consciousness, all the evils, disguised as inherent human failings, that insidiously conspire to ruin. Shame. Anger. Fear. Dependency. BOOK EXCERPT: Fleury's' Playing with Fire'
2009-10-10
Fleury talks for the first time about the secret that started his descent into darkness. He reveals how disgraced former hockey coach Graham James engineered the move that took Fleury, then a Grade 9 student, from Russell, Man., to Winnipeg, where James was coaching the Winnipeg Warriors of the Western Hockey League. Fleury initially played for the St. James Minor Midget Canadians, but practised with James and the Warriors several times a week before finally joining the WHL team when it relocated to Moose Jaw.
THEO TALKS TO HIS FANS
2009-10-10
Hey everyone, I hope you're all well. I just wanted to say thanks for being there for me the last month. You don't know how much I've enjoyed reading your comments and well wishes. It's been crazy, but I guess, welcome to my life. I just wanted to let all of you know that no matter what happens from here on in that I am strong and ready to do this. This story needed to be told. It took a very long time to prepare myself for this but, like I said I'm ready to help by telling my story. I certainly don't need the publicity. I've had enough in the last month. My hope is that this reveal will help another human being to come out. Feel safe enough to come out of the darkness and into the light. Let the chips fall where they may. Remember "DON"T QUIT BEFORE THE MIRACLE."
Ex-NHLer Theo Fleury says he was sexually abused by his junior hockey coach Graham James
2009-10-09
Former NHL star Theoren Fleury is coming clean on what he says was a long-held secret of chronic sex abuse that he believes transformed him from a confused kid into an angry, self-loathing boozer who blew millions of dollars on cards, drugs and lap dancers. Fleury says in his coming autobiography that his abuser was Graham James, the junior hockey coach who pleaded guilty in 1997 to sexually assaulting two of his teenage players over and over again between 1984 and 1995.
MACLEAN’S EXCLUSIVE: Harrowing details from his new book and interview with the retired NHL star
2009-10-09
Retired hockey star Theoren Fleury has at long last confirmed that he was sexually abused by his junior coach, Graham James, a trauma he says drove him to alcohol, drugs and promiscuity throughout his otherwise impressive 16-year NHL career. “The direct result of my being abused was that I became a f—ing raging, alcoholic lunatic,” he writes in Playing with Fire, an autobiography to be released this week, and provided in advance to Maclean’s. “[James] destroyed my belief system. The most influential adult in my life at the time was telling me that what I thought was wrong was right.

THEOREN FLEURY RELEASED FROM TRY-OUT WITH FLAMES
2009-09-25
Friday, September 25, 2009 Calgary, AB - Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today that Theoren Fleury has been released from his try-out agreement.
'DON'T QUIT BEFORE THE MIRACLE'
2009-09-24
In early 2009, when Theoren Fleury decided to shoot for a National Hockey League comeback, the odds were stacked against him. He was in his 40s, out of shape and carrying 215 pounds on his five-foot, six-inch frame. Not to mention the fact he'd been out of the league for six years -- the last four of which were sober. But no matter the challenge, Fleury--the NHL legend, Olympic gold medal winner and the man that all of Calgary seems to be rooting for these days--has always faced it head on. Getting into shape for an NHL comeback was no different. "When I went into this, I didn't have a team to play for, I didn't have anything," he says in a pre-game phone interview from Edmonton. "But I knew if anybody was going to take me seriously, I had to be in the best shape of my life because, at 41 years old, there's obviously a lot of doubters saying, 'Can he do it?' " Fleury is giving the doubters something to think about.

"SHE'S MY WINGER"
2009-09-17
Comeback kid credits wife for putting his life back on track... "She's my winger," said Fleury, exhaling deeply when asked about the woman who helped turn his life around four years back. "She's basically the first person who grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and said, 'That big pile of crap you've been dragging around for 25 years -- we're going to reduce it.' She drew the line in the sand and said 'This is the way it's going to be.' I had no idea where to start."
