Treatment centre for sexually abused children denied funding
Canada’s first treatment centre for child victims of sexual abuse—the Little Warriors Be Brave Ranch—denied funding from the Government of Alberta, told money isn’t available
January 28, 2013—Little Warriors recently received a letter from the Government of Alberta, stating that $650,000 in funding for the Be Brave Ranch was not available.
“We are shocked and devastated by this news,” said Glori Meldrum, founder and chair of Little Warriors. “We have been doing everything in our power to build the Be Brave Ranch for our kids. We know that the Government of Alberta provides funding for the rehabilitation centers for sex offenders, but we have been denied funding for the victims that are left behind.”
According to the Edmonton John Howard Society’s 2012 annual report, the Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security, Government of Alberta, provided the society with $835,773 in funding for that year alone. There are a number of other rehabilitation programs for sex offenders in Edmonton funded by the Alberta Government like the Phoenix Program which is run through Alberta Health Services.
On January 23, the Alberta government announced that it was awarding $30 million toward the $90-million River Valley enhancement plan to make the river valley more accessible for Albertans, and on October 6 of 2012, the Alberta Government announced it was awarding $5 million to CKUA as part of the Community Facility Enhancement Program that provides funds to not-for-profit organizations for their cultural contributions.
“We understand that the river valley is an invaluable asset to Edmontonians. I myself enjoy running in it during the summer months” said Ms. Meldrum, “But how can we give money to projects like these when there are victims of sexual abuse who don’t have a treatment centre to turn to?”
Little Warriors is a national charitable organization that focuses on educating adults about how to help prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. For more information about Little Warriors and the Be Brave Ranch, visit www.littlewarriors.ca.
